Who is Kit?

In three simple letters, I am able to hide behind a pseudonym which is simple in it’s confusing simplicity.

My name’s Chris, though few people outside of work and politics use it. I’ve been Kit since 2.21pm on the 5th of July 1985, having been born just three minuites prior, and christened Kit because of my older sister’s infant speech impedement. Well, that’s the official story from the parents; Kit was, in fact, a common contraction of Christopher during Victorian times (like Bill for William etc) which tells you a lot about my upbringing. While my parents strive to achive middle class respectability, they are more proletarian than they think.

I was born in Salford, I grew up there. I then lived in North Manchester for a while, before moving to London for University. Of which I dropped out of.

When I was 16, I joined the Socialist Workers Party. I was a member for nearly four years, leaving aged 19 disillusioned due to their crass electorial turn with RESPECT, and the pathetic state of party democracy (if there was one). I was then a member of Workers Power for just under a year, obstinantly dropping out for personal reasons but also because I didn’t feel welcome in the organisation anymore. (I may be paranoid, but it doesn’t mean they actually aren’t out to get me, if you see what I mean.) These days, politically, I am around a member of the Alliance for Workers Liberty, and I’m keen to get involved again in political activity. and I’m now active again.

In my political life, I have been a branch organiser in both the SWP (twice) and Workers Power. I took a leading role in the Stop The War Coalition in Manchester, leading over 1,000 school and college students in unofficial strike action against the then impending war in Iraq. I worked full time for a trade union, and have attended trade union and NUS conferences. I am currently involved in the Socialist Youth Network, the Youth Section of the Labour Representation Committee, working with the AWL to build a working class Marxist pole of attraction and to fight for Marxist ideas inside SYN, whilst building that organisation. (I am now a member of the AWL.)
My hobbies include messing about on computers - setting up websites, dabbling in PHP and MySQL, with Linux and exploring Open Source software. I am wicked keen on dance music, and was taught how to mix records by Grahame Park of Galaxy 102 at some random jobs fair my sixth form college sent our class on.

KitNotes is...

socialist, revolutionary socialist at that, feminist, anti-racist, LGBT allied, Trotskyist, Labour, pro-union, rank & file, green, but red at the same time, in solidarity with Iranian and Iraqi workers and women, supportive of all workers in struggle, against Blairism, against imperialism, against Islamism, for a two state solution to the Israel/Palestine conflict, for troops out of Iraq now, for a strong third camp opposed to both the occupation and the 'resistance' in Iraq, against privatisation, for public ownership of all industry under workers' control, so that means hands off the NHS Blair, against Brownism too because he's just a dodgy a geezer as that Blair bloke...
